Quality of Life

Australia is among the top 10 best countries in the world for quality of life, according to multiple measures.

In 2019, the United Nations Human Development Index Report ranked Australia #6 in the world for quality of life; a global survey of 17,000 people by US News & World Report, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and BAV Group rated Australia the #9 best country for quality of life in 2020; and the 2021 HSBC Expat Explorer Survey of 20,000 expat workers around the world discovered that Australia is considered the #2 top country overall.

This high standard of living enjoyed by most Aussies (National Bank Australia survey, February 2016) is indicated by a variety of different measures.

According to the 2017 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Better Life Index, “Australia performs very well in many measures of well-being relative to most other countries in the Better Life Index. Australia ranks at the top in civic engagement and above the average in income and wealth, environmental quality, health status, housing, jobs and earnings, education and skills, subjective well-being, social connections and personal security.”

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) listed several Australian cities among the top 20 “Most Livable Cities” for 2024 out of the 173 cities that it ranked worldwide. Melbourne was ranked #4, Sydney came in 7th place, Adelaide was 11th, Perth was rated #15 and Brisbane was listed #16 in the world for livability.

According to the REA Group’s 2019 Life In Australia Index, which focuses on the livability of Australian cities, Canberra is the #1 best place to live in Australia (receiving especially high marks for affordable decent housing, good job opportunities, quality health services, and safety), followed by #2 Perth, #3 Adelaide, #4 Brisbane, #5 Hobart, #6 Melbourne, #7 Sydney, and #8 Darwin.

With peace and safety, free basic healthcare, long lifespan, widespread prosperity, excellent education system, laidback lifestyle, incredible cities and spectacular scenery, it is not surprising that the 2019 United Nations World Happiness Report listed Australia as the 11th happiest country on Earth!
