As one of the world’s top immigration destinations, Australia has one of the most multicultural populations on the planet.

For example, approximately 29% of the 26.7 million people who live in Australia were born overseas and around 49% of Australian residents have at least one parent who is foreign-born.

Although Australia is one of the largest countries in the world, it is also a rather urbanized nation, with approximately 85% of its residents living less than 50 kilometers from the ocean (mainly dwelling along Australia’s east coast).

With its 4.8 million residents, Sydney is the most populous city in Australia, followed by Melbourne (population 4.4 million), Brisbane (population 2.3 million), Perth (population 2 million) and Adelaide (1.3 million). The national capital of Australia is Canberra (population 381,488) which is located in Australian National Territory (ACT) between Sydney and Melbourne in southeastern Australia.

Other major Australian cities include: Gold Coast, Newcastle, Sunshine Coast, Wollongong, Hobart, Geelong, Townsville, Cairns, Darwin and Toowoomba. Although Sydney has the largest population of any Australian city, Melbourne has the fastest growing population of any city in Australia.
